Turtle Power – Magic Moments #6

My magic moment this week is animal related again, I can see a theme developing!

This time of year is when the Snapping Turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.  I wasn’t lucky enough to see one last year so this year I was determined to.  I’d been out cycling a few times along the path that runs by the lake but I just couldn’t catch a break until early Saturday morning.  Hubbie and I had got up early to go out for a ride on our bikes before it got too hot and finally my luck changed.   We spotted a turtle laying eggs in a flowerbed of all places before she trotted off back to the lake

Mum stays around but not too close I think, they are pretty much on their own from birth

Wow!! That’s awesome (as my children would say)! I love turtles, so now have moose- and turtle-envy! What did the eggs look like, did you see? Will you be able to spot all the little ones making haste back to the lake as well in due course? xx

I’ll keep an eye out for the hatchlings but I think they usually hatch in the middle of the night so I don’t think I’ll see them. I didn’t want to get too close while she was laying in case I disturbed her so I just got a glimpse of her covering up the nest.

Ah, more info about your Silent Sunday 🙂 I think I may have called her a ‘he’ – oops! How amazing to catch her laying her eggs, you’ll have to keep an eye out for the babies 🙂
